We believe that knowing the sky is a real advantage to visual observing.  Finding deep sky objects manually develops a love of and affinity with the sky that cannot be gained any other way.

 

In the early 1990's, we participated in a company sponsored Astronomy outreach program.  This program consisted of donating a six-inch and eight-inch Dobsonian telescope to several hundred elementary and junior high schools.  These telescopes were to be used just like a book in a library.  A condition of the donation was that the telescope would be taken home by students and used to observe the night sky. Most teachers and students could only find the moon in the sky with a telescope, and then with difficulty.  Finder Charts of Bright Telescopic Objects was developed as a tool to help teachers and students find double stars, star clusters, nebulae, and galaxies.  Combining a star chart with a Telrad reticule superimposed was the key to successful telescope use.  They became an invaluable addition to the program and to helping thousands of students get their first glimpse of the wonders of the night sky.

During the development of the first set of charts, we sent a copy to John Dobson for his comments.  He wrote back that he certainly would use these charts as a method for finding dim fuzzy objects in the night sky.  He encouraged us to continue to expand our offerings to popularize looking at more than the standard objects seen at most star parties.

New volumes were added and we offered them to amateur astronomers around the world.  They have enabled telescope users to find deep sky wonders significantly faster than any other help.  Today they can even be found in several major observatories with outreach programs.
